A working photographer's honest comparison after 6 months with both.

Abhi ·

I spent six months travelling with both — the MacBook Pro M3 as my primary machine and the XPS 15 borrowed from a friend in Berlin. Here's the honest verdict from someone who edits photos, writes code, and works from cafes with bad WiFi.

Pros & Cons

MacBook Pro M3 — Pros

  • + Exceptional battery life — comfortably gets through a full day of editing
  • + ProMotion display is the best screen I've ever worked on
  • + Silent operation — fanless under most workloads
  • + Excellent thermal performance: no throttling during long Lightroom sessions
  • + macOS ecosystem integration (iPhone continuity, AirDrop, iMessage)

Cons

  • RAM is not upgradeable after purchase
  • Storage is soldered — expensive to upgrade later
  • Limited to macOS ecosystem
  • 14" screen can feel cramped on complex editing layouts

Dell XPS 15 — Pros

  • + Dedicated GPU handles GPU-accelerated tasks significantly faster
  • + More storage per pound — better value for heavy video editors
  • + Larger 15.6" display gives more real estate
  • + OLED panel has deeper blacks and slightly more saturated colours
  • + Better upgrade path with 64GB RAM available

Cons

  • Battery life is genuinely poor — not a coffee shop laptop without a charger
  • Gets warm under extended load
  • OLED can exhibit burn-in over time
  • Windows 11 battery optimisation still inferior to macOS

Verdict

For travel and everyday creative work, the MacBook Pro M3 wins without question. The battery life difference alone makes it the only viable choice for working while moving. The XPS 15 is the better machine if you're tethered to a power outlet and need GPU muscle for video rendering or 3D work.
