The Work-From-Anywhere Desk Setup
Ergonomics, focus, and aesthetics for people who move a lot.

Working remotely while travelling sounds romantic until your back starts complaining. After a year of laptop-on-bed setups and café shoulders, I got methodical. This is the kit I now pack in one checked bag that transforms any desk, table, or hotel writing surface into a proper workspace.

Pros & Cons
Current Kit — Pros
- + Everything fits in carry-on + checked bag with room for clothes
- + OLED portable monitor is stunning for design work and colour grading
- + Keychron K3 gives tactile feedback without destroying café neighbours
- + MX Anywhere 3 works on glass and marble surfaces without a pad
- + Sony XM5 noise cancelling is genuinely transformative in loud spaces
Cons
- − Portable monitors need their own power — more cables
- − Keychron is louder than Apple keyboard in quiet spaces
- − Cotopaxi Allpa lacks laptop suspension (add a sleeve)
- − Sony headphones have a slightly plasticky feel at the price
Option B — Pros
- + Espresso Touch display is thinner and lighter than the ASUS
- + Apple ecosystem devices pair seamlessly on macOS
- + CalDigit dock is better for a permanent base location
- + Magic Mouse has better gesture control on macOS
- + Nomatic pack has better organisation for the obsessively tidy
Cons
- − Espresso Touch is significantly more expensive
- − Apple Magic Mouse is unergonomic for long sessions
- − CalDigit is bulky — defeats the portability goal
- − Nomatic lacks external water bottle pocket (a dealbreaker for me)
Verdict
The current kit took about 18 months to refine. The OLED monitor was the biggest upgrade — working on a beautiful screen anywhere has a genuine impact on how much I enjoy the work. Don't cut corners on the laptop stand: your neck will thank you within the first week.
